THE LITTLE KNOWN BUSINESS
Yes, people really do earn up to $10,000, $50,000, even $100,000 or more a year selling books and information by mail and/or on the Internet. There are numerous people scattered across the United States that have been in this profitable business for years. Many are simple, one person operations while others have grown to be relatively large companies with a number of employees.

This is the type of business that can be started on a small, "shoe-string" budget and operated in a spare room of your home -- even from the kitchen table.  Start and stay small, if that's your desire, or allow your business to grow as time passes.  Your imagination is your only limit.

Maybe you only want to earn $500 or $600 per month extra in your spare time to supplement your present income. Great ... this business can provide that. On the other hand, possibly your style of living or circumstances requires $50,000, $80,000 or even more just to survive. This can still be the business for you.

Earning good money in this business does not require that you be super smart, have a special educational background, a degree or that you take some expensive correspondence or lengthy college course. Let's get right down to business. We have developed our personalities and thinking based on what we were taught by our parents, teachers and the scores of others that influenced our early years. Like a piece of pottery clay we have been molded into what we are today. Certainly you'll concede that at least a portion of the data we received from others, although given with love and well meaning, was -- in the real world -- a bald faced lie.

Many of us were told that getting a good education, marrying the right person, working hard and having a secure job were the keys to success. Yes, in this country there are countless millions who have followed these guidelines and would be stone-cold broke if they missed their next pay check. Others, although highly educated, have found themselves laid off and cannot find suitable work.

Folks, it is simply NOT like it used to be. A recent CBS News broadcast reported that 2,000 people a day are losing their jobs. You read or hear the reports daily where such-and-such big corporation has just laid off several hundred or maybe several thousand employees. There was a time when one could begin their career working for a nice, solid, secure company and expect to retain that job until retirement. It's just NOT that way any more ... and if you think you might not be among the next group to be out on the street, think again!

It is true from time to time that in many parts of the country the unemployment rate may be low. The question that is never answered is "At what type of jobs are people finding employment?"

Recent college graduates -- with top grades and good degrees -- are finding it harder and harder to find decent employment. Many are trying to hold on to the menial part-time job they had in school just to survive. A good education, contrary to what you may have been told, does not guarantee you a good job. That's an absolute truth!

Surely you've heard the horror stories of those that have been fired within two months of their retirement after serving forty or more years in that steady secure job. How about the homemaker that spends twenty years taking care of the family and raising the kids who suddenly finds herself trying to find a minimum wage job because her husband slipped into the middle-age crazies, quit his job, ran off with his secretary and hasn't been heard from in months?

You've probably heard the statistics that at retirement age 95% of the people are either dead or dead broke. It's not a joke, it's a fact!

Maybe you're just fed-up with working at some deadend job -- barely scraping by paycheck to paycheck.  Maybe you're now saying, "There must be a better way" -- and there is!

I'll totally concede that there can be no iron-clad guarantee that if you choose to get into this business of selling books by mail and/or on the Internet you will suddenly, automatically leap into higher levels of earnings. I will assure you, without hesitation, that the business itself is sound and if you're willing to put forth the necessary effort, success can be yours.

A business such as this one has a much better than average chance of prospering since you avoid the heavy expense of employees, costly inventories or equipment, fancy offices and the like.

It does take money to begin and operate this business as it does any money-making venture. The good news is that many successful entrepreneurs began with just a few dollars and used their determination in place of money. You can start with little more than a few envelopes, stamps, printed brochures and a few dollars for a small classified advertisement.

A CHANGE OF ATTITUDE
The majority of us have had our thinking formed into the "job-mold."  That is, we think in terms of being told what to do, when to do it and how to do it.  We are told when to go to work, when to eat lunch, when to quit for the day, how many days we can be ill each year, what money we will make and when to take a vacation.

Many people in jobs do little work (there's one in every crowd) and at the end of the pay period, still receive payment for their activities, or should we say non-production.  Being self-employed will require considerable work and your paycheck will be zero or extremely small in the first few weeks. You must look beyond today. You must see the big picture -- and the big paychecks of the future.

Presuming you are currently employed, I am not suggesting you run to your boss, tell him or her off and quit on the spot. But DO understand that a job is simply a situation where you are being paid to assist someone else in reaching their goals.

Being in business for yourself may be a giant step for you ... and yes, there is the possibility of failure.  A quotation from years ago comes to mind from an unknown speaker. It was stated, "that with the freedom to fail, comes the freedom to succeed."

You need not cower before any master. You can stand on your own two feet and write your own destiny.

MONEY IS IMPORTANT
I've heard people say, "Money isn't important to me." In thinking back I've found the ones that utter this statement are always the ones that have no money. Is it possible that this remark is just a convenient excuse?

Money is important ... and as critical as health, shelter, warmth and love.  To say it is not important is ridiculous. Money is what allows you to give your children a better education and a better start in life  Money earned from a business of your own can provide you a better lifestyle including a nicer home and automobile, but more importantly, you can properly provide for yourself or a family member in the event of a serious illness or the other emergencies that are a part of life.

We know that we need money to exist. Why is it then that so many ignore, or fail to understand, that we must make big money now -- more than just enough to live on? You must earn enough now to allow you to put a good portion aside into investments that can provide you income and financial security for your latter years or the emergencies that surely will come along.

Money is not evil. It is simply the payment for services you provide to others. If you want to make large sums of money, simply provide large sums of service. It is your just reward ... and you are entitled to it just as much as the next person.

WHERE TO BEGIN
In the simplest of terms there are three major ingredients found in any business.  They are:
(1) Research and Development: This is where you determine (a) the type of product or service to provide, (b) what people are willing to pay for this, (c) what equipment, knowledge or skills are required and (d) if you will start full or part-time.

(2) Sales and Promotion: (a) How is the product or service to be marketed, (b) will you use salespeople on the street, telemarketing, TV spots or other forms of advertising? If you build a better mousetrap and although you live in the heart of the forest, we can assure you the world will NOT beat a path to your door.  You must advertise and let the world know about and want your better mousetrap ... or whatever you have to offer.

(3) Administration: In simple terms, this is the (a) paperwork flow, (b) the handling of personnel, (c) paying the bills, (d) collecting the money and the everyday routine of running your own business.

It should now be obvious to you that starting a business involves more than just deciding to go into business. Relax, as you will learn later in this report, most of the really hard work is already done. You can begin operation of this business almost immediately.

THE TYPES OF BOOKS TO SELL
For years, the most poplular, easiest to sell books and reports have been of the "how-to" variety -- providing information that others want or need to know. The titles are numerous, certainly too many to list, but all revolve around basic human needs and wants. Titles on how to make more money, start a business, find love, improve your mind, be a better salesperson or manager, beat the stock market, repair your home and the like have been, and will continue to be, top sellers.

Millionaires write books on how they made it to the top and people pay money to "learn the secrets." Business people are willing to pay handsomely for directories which supply information as to where they can purchase certain products or books on how to better run their companies and how to make more money. Homemakers or restaurant owners want new recipes and pet owners want to know how to train their animals. Most everyone is willing to pay money to learn how to do something that will make their life easier, more profitable or more fun.

These are the types of books, reports and directories to sell. They are in demand and can be sold at handsome profits.

PROFITS TO 1000% AND MORE
Buying books and reports wholesale, with discounts that range from 50% to as high as 80%, can produce good income with gross profits up to 400%. This means that you could make as much as $16.00 for selling a $20.00 book. If you sell a hundred books you could make $1600.00. Sell one thousand, make $16,000. While these figures are certainly acceptable, this is but the tip of the iceberg.

The big profits come when you learn to write and publish your own book, booklet or information report. Don't panic!  It's not nearly as difficult as it might seem at first. These items can be produced for as low as 10¢, 20¢ or 30¢ a piece and sold for $10.00 or more. When selling information people want by mail or through the Internet it's not the size of the book, the number of pages or the fancy cover in which they are interested. What they really pay for is the information provided.

There are many simple publications, similiar in ways to what you're reading now, when properly marketed can bring incredible profits to the writers.

Even if you can't write, you can be successful in this business. All you need do, in the beginning, is to sell books, directories and reports written by others. Later you might consider taking a beginner's writing course at a nearby college or university or have a student act as a "ghost writer."

WHY MAIL ORDER?
At last report, the estimates reflect that over $64 billion worth of merchandise is being sold each year in the U.S. through the mails by catalogs, the Internet and other media.  Books alone account for almost $2 billion or more of these sales.

The majority of the population have made numerous purchases utilizing the ease and convenience of shopping and having items delivered by mail -- often ordering items not easily found in local retail establishments.

Mail order marketing is not a new, untested business or some short-lived fad, nor is it a one shot deal where you make a single sale and never serve that customer again.

Internet marketing is certainly newer but those that are successful are using, with only minor changes, time proven mail order marketing techniques that have worked for years. With these techniques it's not necessary to knock on doors making cold calls or to impose on your friends asking them to buy your product or service. Also, if you do the right things, it is very much a repeat business whereas many of your customers you create today will remain your customers for years and buy from you again and again.

Marketing books and information by mail and/or the Internet can be the perfect full or part-time, work from home business.

Mail order and the Internet is the least expensive way known to reach and sell your books to a population of upwards of 300 million people without the expense of having a retail store in every nook and cranny across America. Customers like to deal with reputable firms and in this industry you can present that image with little more than proper business ethics and nice stationery. No one ever need know that you are a beginner and work from your kitchen table or an office at home unless you choose to tell them.

You will never experience a serious problem doing business by mail as long as you follow a couple of simple, common sense rules and do what you say you will do.

This is the type of business in which the entire family can become involved. A lot of work, like putting labels on envelopes or filling out order forms, can be done while watching television.

When you operate strictly by mail or on the Internet there are no specific office hours you must keep and it's easy to take mini-vacations throughout the year. While it is wise to ship your orders promptly, no one is really going to notice if you're away a few days or even a week at a time.

ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION
An entire book could be written on just this subject alone -- in fact, many have been. While I will just skim the surface in the space available here, you may consider this the foundation of the ways you can sell books and information by mail.

As most people, you will probably begin with small, inexpensive classified ads in magazines, on the Internet or some of the larger newspapers. These ads are most often used to bring inquiries from the readers requesting more information about the offer. A more detailed advertising piece is sent, along with information as to how to order. A percentage of those receiving additional details will order the item being marketed.

Another method is to use small or large display advertising space. The cost is higher but here you have the space to give more details about what you are selling.  An order form is often included in the ad itself and readers are encouraged to order now. Many will.

Other methods include direct mail where you buy a mailing list and mail your printed catalog, sales flyer or circular directly to potential customers asking them to buy. Of course, now the Internet can also be utilized as an effective, yet low cost marketing method.

Books can also be sold by radio talk shows, where the author is interviewed by phone from the comfort of his or her own home or office. If you get into it big, you may even wish to travel the country appearing on TV interview shows. Who knows, you might end up on one of the national late night talk shows.

There are numerous techniques that allow you to receive FREE ADVERTISING. Also, agreements can be made where your ads are placed with no advance money. You pay only a certain amount after your orders are received.

ADMINISTRATION
This is extremely simple in a small start-up mail order operation such as the ones most people begin. It is just a matter of placing ads or circulating your promotional material, picking up the mail, totaling the checks to make a bank deposit, filling the orders and getting them sent on their way. It really is just about that simple.

The bookkeeping can be very easy and does not require any special skill other than subtraction and addition.  If you can keep a good checkbook and pay suppliers with a check, the rest can be handled by a bookkeeper at the end of the year at minimal cost.  An accountant is not necessary unless you choose to have them do your tax returns or give you tax planning advice.

As your business grows you may need a general manager, graphic design artist, a writer, a computer and operator, a mail clerk, a head of advertising and other administrative helpers. Unless, you plan to start in a large way, none of these are necessary in the beginning.
